In what appears to be a global first, the UK’s Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal has removed a lawyer from the Register of Foreign Lawyers for using AI-generated fake legal authorities. The case, SRA v Abhishek Kumar, is a landmark for professional ethics in the AI era. Kumar relied on hallucinated citations while defending himself in a disciplinary hearing, and then, after being warned, submitted a further response containing more false material generated by AI. The tribunal deemed the misconduct so severe that it would have warranted removal from the register on its own, apart from other serious allegations against him.
