US Reaches Iran Nuclear Accord; Sanctions Relief Awaits IAEA Verification

The U.S. has announced the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, but OFAC has clarified that broad sanctions against Iran remain in effect pending verification of its nuclear-related commitments by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The United States and other world powers have reached a landmark agreement with Iran, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), to ensure its nuclear program is exclusively peaceful. This historic deal creates a potential pathway for relief from the extensive U.S. and international sanctions that have isolated Iran's economy, which could eventually open significant opportunities for clients in sectors from energy and aviation to finance and consumer goods.

However, the relief is not immediate. The U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has clarified that all sanctions remain in place for now. Sanctions will only be eased after "Implementation Day," a future date triggered when the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verifies that Iran has fully implemented its key initial nuclear-related commitments. Until that verification occurs, U.S. persons remain broadly prohibited from engaging in transactions involving Iran, and the legal landscape is unchanged. Counsel should advise clients to await further definitive guidance from OFAC pending the IAEA's future certification.
